His response made me feel comfortable.
Of course it did, because he's a scam artist charging you lord-knows-what for something illegal (https://retropie.org.uk/about/legal/) that you could get for $35. But I digress... And it seems like you already know you messed up (or at least, you should...)
When you are in a game, the usual hotkey to get back to the emulation station main menu (where you select your systems) is to press start and select at the same time. Once you are in the menu, you can press select and pick the option "configure input" to configure your controllers. Just hold a button on the controller so the system recognizes it, then follow the prompts on screen. Also in the main menu there should be an icon that says retropie. Click that and you can configure the wifi. You will need a USB keyboard to enter your WiFi password.
Also make sure you are shutting the system down properly... In the main menu press start then go to quit then shutdown system. Only after it goes through its shutdown sequence should you unplug it.
My recommendation is to get a new SD card and start from scratch and configure it how you want. Keep the SD that sca- er, friendly eBay seller, made for you so at least you don't lose what you have. But like everyone has already said, it's impossible to know how he set it up so everything I told you might very well not work because it could be set up differently.
Just follow everything here: https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/First-Installation
To learn how to do anything else like setting up Kodi or installing new games, just Google it. There's resources everywhere.
Some of the option menus can be intimidating because they look like old MS-DOS commands but don't worry, it's really easy. Plus if you get a new SD you don't have to worry about messing anything up.
